Need Help Taking A Good Photo?

  1. Get in close and fill the frame with your subject. Make sure it’s clear what you’re focusing on and try to avoid wasted space.

  2. Consider the light you have available. Natural light is a great way to improve a photo but even artificial light will create focus on your subject and create shadows and details.

  3. Take lots of photos! Don’t be picky, snap away and have a look back through them afterwards. The more you take, the more likely you are to have good ones which you can use.

  4. Consider your framing. Make sure your entire subject is in the shot and that it is clear that you are focusing on that one item.

  5. Keep it simple. Interesting angles are great sometimes but not if they detract from your subject. Good lighting and framing are the things you should be focusing on.

  6. Having a good perspective is extremely important. If your subject is a door, looking down or up at it will create unusual angles. Crouching slightly will achieve straight edges and a more professional looking picture.

  7. Light is important but don’t ignore the shade! Shade can create some really interesting details and really give your photo a unique look.

  8. Use the rule of thirds. Divide your photo into vertical and horizontal thirds. You will now have 9 sections, try to fill the centre section with your subject area.

  9. Consider what’s in the background. A photo can be ruined by a sock on the floor or an overflowing bin. Have a quick look at your frame and move anything distracting and which takes attention from your subject.

  10. Break the rules and have fun! It might not pay off but you never know, you just might create something special!
