Last week I was reading the brilliant mad about the house when I came across this little gem:
And it made me realise that I have never written a post dedicated to oak furniture....
Needless to say I am a big, big fan of oak - it's beautiful, versatile, and very durable. I think a lot of people overlook oak furnishings in favour of cheaper, ultra-fashionable or super-quirky pieces. And it's not that I think there's anything wrong with that. Affordable furniture and accessories allow us to experiment and have lots of fun with our homes without the commitment that more expensive pieces might ask of us. But, for those key pieces that we want to last a lifetime (or thereabouts), you can't go far wrong with solid oak.
Here are a few of my recent spots:
'Lucky' is a beautiful statement armchair available from loaf:
The fabric is dyed, woven, and embroidered in Rajasthan, which is then sent to Long Eaton in Derbyshire where it is turned into the wonderful armchair you see above, complete with solid weathered oak legs.
This coffee table from nu-trend:
Matches chrome legs with a solid oak top for an understated, contemporary table.
I'm a big fan of pieces like this:
It's so simple but yet makes a massive statement. This particular table is available in three finishes: 'natural', 'dark stained', and 'antique' (pictured). Available from HEAL'S.
Another simple piece that will really stand out:
This is a solid oak sideboard available from 4Living, and boasts clean lines as part of a simple and contemporary design.
This unique 'Twisted Cabinet' perhaps isn't for everyone. The sharp lines and corners break pretty much every rule of Feng Shui:
But if you want to get people talking without using bold colours or patterns, this is unlikely to fail. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick for BENCHMARK.
I'm going to finish with this; it's oak veneer so perhaps shouldn't strictly be in this post, but I think it's great, and it's my post so I make the rules :) It's designed by NUEVO, and is available from inmod:
Have you seen any other great oak pieces lately?
